Schmuck Quickies

Early last year we were given the opportunity to hang out with berlin based performance jewellery designer Yuka Oyama. We were lucky enough to have her guide us through our own versions of her famous Schmuck Quickies. Schmuck Quickies pretty much translates to quick jewellery.

Our teacher Melinda Young has written a great article about Oyama, which references our involvment with Oyama's Schmuck Quickies.

While in Sydney [for Sydney Design 07] she will also be working with local jewellery students, staging ‘guerrilla’ performances in public spaces. Through Schmuck Quickies Oyama aims to facilitate projects that utilise social resources and enhance social interactions in an increasingly insular world. In each location her interactions with the public become the source of her work and creativity, revealing unique insights into the character, not only of individual participants, but also more general concerns of the populous. My concept based itself on my last name – Brand - I find it interesting that people buy clothing for its label, and paying a vast amount of money for a massed produced item just for its brand name. So I started thinking about ways in which I might be able to swap them one of my ‘brands’ for their clothing label – thus rendering their item worthless, but perhaps making it worth more as it was ‘branded’ by handmade/one-off label of my creation.

Stay tuned for some more documentation of this project - it was a really fun and interesting experience!
